Watching gene expression in color.
A combination of two fluorescent proteins with different half-lives allows gene expression to be followed with improved time resolution
Breakdown of Particle-Hole Symmetry in the Lowest Landau Level Revealed by Tunneling Spectroscopy
Tunneling measurements on 2D electron gases at high magnetic field reveal a
qualitative difference between the two spin sublevels of the lowest Landau
level. While the tunneling current-voltage characteristic at filling factor
is a single peak shifted from zero bias by a Coulomb pseudogap, the
spectrum at shows a well-resolved double peak structure. This
difference is present regardless of whether and occur at
the same or different magnetic fields. No analogous effect is seen at and 7/2 in the first excited Landau level.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Spectroscopic Ellipsometer and Polarimeter Systems
A spectroscopic ellipsometer or polarimeter system having a source of a polychromatic beam of electromagnetic radiation, a polarizer, a stage for supporting a material system, an analyzer, a dispersive optics and a detector system which comprises a multiplicity of detector elements, there being apertures before the stage for supporting a material system, and thereafter, the system being present in an environmental control chamber
SPECTROSCOPICELLIPSOMETER AND POLARMETER SYSTEMIS
A rotating compensator spectroscopic ellipsometer or polarimeter system having a source of a polychromatic beam of electromagnetic radiation, a polarizer, a stage for Supporting a material system, an analyzer, a dispersive optics and a detector system which comprises a multiplicity of detector elements, the system being functionally present in an environmental control chamber and therefore suitable for application in wide spectral range, (for example, 130-1700 nm). Preferred compensator design involves a Substantially achromatic multiple element compensator systems wherein multiple total internal reflections enter retardance into an entered beam of electromagnetic radiation, and the elements thereof are oriented to minimize changes in the net retardance vs. the input beam angle resulting from changes in the position and/ or rotation of the system of elements

Molecular beam growth of graphene nanocrystals on dielectric substrates
We demonstrate the growth of graphene nanocrystals by molecular beam methods
that employ a solid carbon source, and that can be used on a diverse class of
large area dielectric substrates. Characterization by Raman and Near Edge X-ray
Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopies reveal a sp2 hybridized hexagonal
carbon lattice in the nanocrystals. Lower growth rates favor the formation of
higher quality, larger size multi-layer graphene crystallites on all
investigated substrates. The surface morphology is determined by the roughness
of the underlying substrate and graphitic monolayer steps are observed by
ambient scanning tunneling microscopy.Comment: Accepted in Carbon; Discussion section added; 20 pages, 6 figures (1

Nonmonotonic Temperature-dependent Resistance in Low Density 2D Hole Gases
The low temperature longitudinal resistance-per-square Rxx(T) in ungated
GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells of high peak hole mobility 1.7x10^6 cm^2/Vs is
metallic for 2D hole density p as low as 3.8x10^9 cm-2. The electronic
contribution to the resistance, R_{el}(T), is a nonmonotonic function of T,
exhibiting thermal activation, R_{el}(T) ~ exp{-E_a/kT}, for kT<<E_F and a
heretofore unnoted decay R_{el}(T) ~ 1/T for k_T>EF. The form of R_{el}(T) is
independent of density, indicating a fundamental relationship between the low
and high T scattering mechanisms in the metallic state
